Virtualization is a new buzzwords among the techies. We can look at virtualization from two different angles:
1. The normal user
2. A company having a large number of servers.
1. The normal User
From a normal end user point of view, Virtualization is just another software that you can run on your
existing Operating system. This software allows you to run multiple operating systems simultaneousely. For e.g., lets assume that you are currently running windows vista. If you have a virtualization software (like vmware, microsoft virtual pc, xen etc.), then you can run windows xp, linux all at the same time from your existing windows vista itself. Just like you would toggle between 2 applications, you can toggle between the different operating systems.
2. A company having a Large number of servers
Lets take a practical example where 10 servers will be running round the clock with for e.g., 3 webservers, 4 database servers, 2 file servers, and one domain controller.
1. All these servers are usually never used together.
2. Still, every one of them will be running round the clock.
3. The hardware capability of each of these server machine would be much higher than that required for a single instance.
Here virtualizaton comes to the rescue by allowing us to install multiple severs on the same machine thus saving valuable hardware, electricity and space. Also, the maintanence (backup, upgradation etc.) are much much more easier.
