This article is just from my personal experience with different operating systems, but the same boradband connection.
Test subjects: Testing was conducted on Windows XP (Professional), Windows Vista (Ultimate), and Windows Server 2003 (Enterprise Edition). The download Managers is Free download Manager and Windows Transfer Manager.
Test Environment: I used the same Airtel Broadband Connection (with quoted speed of 256 kbps).
How the test was conducted: Downloads from Microsoft site, Cisco site, uTorrent and a 5 other (you can read it as pirated softwares) sites were done.
Test Result:
For Windows XP and windows server 2003, I used to get download speeds ranging from 15kbps to 32 kbps depending on time when I used to do the download. But, generally, the speed used to hover around 25kbps almost 85 % of the time when the download client is free download manager.
Next, after upgrading to Windows vista, I am getting download speeds ranging from 15 kbps to 65 kbps. If the download clien is free download manager, I the speed hovers around 30 kbps, and when Microsoft file transfer manager is used, the speed hovers around 38kbps almost 85% of the time.
The verdict: The verdict is not backed by scientific figures, but purely from personal experience. The best (read as fastest) download option is to use Windows Vista and the download client as Microsoft File Transfer Manager.
