It is indeed possible to install windows xp over windows vista (i.e., installing windows xp after installing windows vista) as described below :

Pre-installation checks

1. Availability of a licensed copy of windows xp, with adequate licenses left for further installation.

2. Enough space on hard-disk to accomadate another copy of windows xp.

Now head over to PronetWorks and HowToGeek for a detailed guide on installing Windows XP on your pre-installed Vista laptop. It’s a bit geeky method but nicely illustrated at both the places.

Preparation

Log onto the existing vista operating system

First, we need to create a new partition on which xp can be installed.

1. Right click “My computer” -> Manage-> Disk Management

2. Right click on the Primary hard drive and select “Shrink volume” ( I strongly suggest that you give the new partition a size that equals 40 % of the original size). If everything goes well, you will have unallocated space shown in black.

3.change drive letters

Create windwos xp partition

1. Right click the unallocated space and select “New simple volume”. Follow the wizard.

2. When the wizard reaches the point where you need to insert the “volume label”, give an appropriate name for the new volume. (Here, I suggest that you use the name “xp” to make things easy)

3. Select quick format and complete the wizard.

4. Rebot twice.

Installation of windows xp

Insert the windows xp cd, and reboot the system to boot from this cd. Install xp in the normal manner.

Once xp is installed, we wont be able to boot into vista (But only for the time being… follow the next few steps to complete the process :) )
