I first got introduced to Openoffice when my friend studying for law mentioned that he was using openoffice as he could not afford to buy MS office. Believe me, this guy types around 500 pages of essay and needs to do atleaset 15-20 presentations per week.

That is how I went to OpenOffice Website and downloaded a windows compatible version for free (The full version !! ). The first difference to an MS office is that Microsoft has word, excel and powerpoint, whereas openoffice has writer, calc and impress - everything else functions and looks same as MS office.

Now open office triumphs over MS office with the fact that any MS office document can be opened and modified with Open Office. Just be careful while saving - Do a “Save As” and select the appropriate file format right from MS office 97 to MS office 2003.

OK.. now for all those guys who download a lot of word/excel/powerpoint files and need to view them in their most familiar office format, Microsoft provides their corresponding readers - for free download. i.e. you can open and read the documents, whereas modification is not possible. the download links are :

MS Word Reader
MS Excel Reader
MS Powerpoint Reader
So this is our suggestion for legal and cost effective office automation -

1. Use Open office for all Modifications and New works.

2. Use corresponding MS Office readers to cross check your work.

Finally, one more functionality of openoffice - It allows you to “Export as PDF“, and create pdf documents on the fly.
